Ideal Temperature for Interior Painting

What is the ideal temperature range for interior painting?

Repainting the interior of your home can be an expensive and time consuming process. There are several variables one must consider to ensure that the job gets done correctly and efficiently. Temperature is a major factor in how the paint will look when it's dry.

Ideal temperatures for paint application.

For the prospective DIY painter the task of repainting the interior of your home can be a formidable one. You want it done efficiently and correctly, and if critical mistakes are made it can prove needlessly expensive and disruptive to your life. Temperature is a very important variable to consider even when the painting project is inside. Painting when it's too hot or too cold can result in the paint not drying properly or uniformly bonding to the surface. At Ryan Painting we recommend applying oil paint between 50 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Latex paints apply best between 50 and 85 degrees.

Why does temperature matter?

If it is too hot it will cause the paint to dry too quickly, causing blisters and cracks. The paint could dry from the outside in, causing a layer of film to form over wet paint. If it is too cold it will be much harder for the paint to bond to the surface you apply it to, which affects the appearance and longevity of the paint layer. Freshly painted rooms should be well ventilated to reduce drying time and prevent high concentrations of noxious fumes. Often the best solution to this is to crack a window. Consequently, outside temperature should also be taken into account even with interior projects. At Ryan Painting Company we take all of these factors into careful consideration to ensure that our work is done efficiently and to the highest standard of quality so that you and your family can enjoy your freshly updated home as soon as possible.
